Ways to Wire a Fan Motor

Posted By 2014 August 05th Tuesday

Fan motors can have two or more wire connects depending on the type and design of the motor. When wiring a fan motor, it is very important to check the wiring diagram that comes with the motor. For small motors these diagrams are usually found in the manufacturer's documentation and installation instructions. For larger motors, the wiring diagram can be found on a label attached to the motor. Locate and study the diagram before trying to wire the fan motor.

Locate the wiring diagram for the fan motor. Identify each wire or terminal connection on the fan motor. For example: a simple 120-volt house fan motor usually has two wire connections, the black hot wire and the white common wire. If the fan is grounded, there may be a third green wire which is the ground wire.

Study what each wire connection is to be used for. For some motors, not all of the wire connections will be used at one time. Some motors are designed for multiple applications and can be wired in various configurations.

Choose the appropriate wiring configuration for your application. Shut off power to the circuit that will provide power to the motor. Connect the motor wires as instructed by the wiring diagram chosen. Verify all wire connections before turning the power back on.

Turn the power on and test the motor by starting it. If there are any sparks, smoke, or no fan motion, something is not right. Shut off the power immediately.
