1. The purpose of lubrication
The purpose of adding lubricant to linear guide is to prevent metallic contact between the interior of linear guide track surface and the rolling element, reduce friction and abrasion, to prevent the calorification and sintering. When the rolling contact surface forms oil film between the track surface and the rolling element, it also has the effect of reducing the contact stress caused by load. Manage lubrication well, fully forming oil film is very important to ensure the reliability of linear guide.
2. Selection of the lubricants
In order to give full play to the performance of linear guide, we must select suitable lubricant types and lubrication methods according to linear guide’s mode, load, and speed etc.. However, compared with the sliding guide, the dependence to lubricant is extremely small, so it is little oil adding, add long interval, which will substantially reduces the burden of maintenance management. The lubricants used for linear guide can be roughly divided into lubricating agent  and lubricant oil can two kinds.
3. Grease lubrication
Linear guides generally uses lithium soap grease (JIS consistency No. #2), for heavy-load, it is recommended to use extreme pressure additives grease.
In a clean and a high vacuum environment, you can use grease based on synthetic oils or low dust emitting, volatilization soap base grease other than lithium class. You should take full consideration to how to satisfy the lubrication performance at the same time of linear guides meets the service conditions, when use in such conditions.
4. The grease filling interval
Even if good quality of grease, its performance will become aging with running time, so it should be replenished appropriately. Grease filling interval varies depending on the conditions: usually once every six months, for the long-distance reciprocating machinery, grease filling once every three month is recommended.
5. The method of grease filling
Fully fill in the grease from the grease filling devices such as grease nozzle, until the old grease is discharged. Run-in after greasing filling, the excess grease will be discharged from linear guide, start the operation after remove discharged grease.
Standard of grease filled amount is about 1/3-1/2 of linear guide inner space volume, when initial grease filling from grease nozzle, there will be a part of loss on the filling path, so it is necessary to consider the loss factor.
